WhatsApp for Pet Groomers and Boarding Kennels — Reminders and Pickup Notifications
A missed grooming slot is wasted table time you can't get back, and a boarding kennel with an owner who forgets pickup day ends up with an animal — and a phone call — nobody planned for. Both problems are schedule problems, and both shrink the moment owners get a WhatsApp message instead of a hoped-for phone pickup. This is a practical setup for groomers and kennels, not a sales pitch for either.
Why email and SMS lose to WhatsApp here
Pet owners book a groomer or a kennel stay days or weeks ahead, often while distracted (dropping the dog at daycare, between meetings) and promptly forget the exact time. Email reminders sit unread; SMS is fine but can't carry a photo. WhatsApp does both: a short text reminder the owner actually opens, and later a photo of a freshly groomed dog or a note that the boarded cat is ready — the kind of message owners forward to their family instead of ignoring.
The three messages that matter
1. Booking confirmation, sent immediately. As soon as a booking is made — through your scheduling tool, a form, or manually — fire a WhatsApp confirmation with the date, time, and what to bring (leash, vaccination card, favourite blanket for a kennel stay). This closes the loop before the owner has even left the counter.

"text": "Booking confirmed: Bella (Labrador) — grooming on Thu 10/22 at 2:00 PM. Please bring her vaccination card."
}'
2. A reminder the day before. This is the one that actually prevents no-shows. Queue it from whatever system holds your appointment calendar — most groomers and kennels already run on a booking tool with webhooks or a daily export; point either at the TextMeFlow API the same way you'd wire up Calendly reminders or a Google Calendar flow. For boarding, send the reminder the morning drop-off is due, with any last pre-stay instructions (fasting before a vet check, medication schedule).
3. "Ready for pickup", with a photo. This is the message owners remember. For grooming, attach a photo of the finished cut — it doubles as word-of-mouth marketing when the owner shares it. For kennels, a short "all good, ready whenever you are" removes the anxious call checking in. Media sends work the same as text, just with a media_url field — see the media API guide for size limits and supported formats (up to 100 MB per file, so even a short video clip works).

Handling replies without hiring a receptionist
Owners will reply to these messages — "can we push to 3 PM?", "does she need anything special tonight?" — and a groomer or kennel usually doesn't have someone staffed to watch a shared inbox all day. Set a webhook on your TextMeFlow number so replies land as a notification in whatever you already use to run the front desk (a group chat, a ticket tool, even just an email alert), rather than making staff check a phone between appointments. The webhook events overview covers exactly which events fire and what each payload contains.
Keep it to one number per pickup, not a blast list
A common mistake: sending the same "ready for pickup" broadcast to a list of owners whose pets are all leaving that day. Don't. Each message should go to the specific owner for their specific pet — it's a one-to-one transactional message, not marketing, and sending genuinely personalized messages one at a time is also what keeps a WhatsApp number healthy. If you're running higher volume across multiple staff members booking in parallel, look at multi-device access (available from the Business plan) so more than one person can send from the same business number without sharing a login.
GDPR in one paragraph
Pet owners' phone numbers and appointment details are personal data, same as any other customer record. You're on solid ground sending transactional confirmations and reminders without separate marketing consent, since the owner booked the service and expects that communication — but keep handling "STOP" replies automatically, and don't repurpose the same number for promotional offers without opt-in. This is general information, not legal advice for your specific situation.
Getting started
If you're not yet sending anything automated, the fastest path is pairing a number and sending your first confirmation by hand before wiring up a booking tool — the getting started guide walks through pairing and your first API call in a few minutes. From there, grooming salons and kennels typically automate the day-before reminder first, since that's the one that pays for itself in recovered no-show slots.
